This spectacular rug from Better World Arts features an Aboriginal design by artist Andrea Adamson Tiger.

Andrea tells us about the seven sisters and their travels through the country as they are pursued by Wati (Man) Nyiru. Nyiru fell in love with the sisters, and even though they were of the wrong skin name, he was desperate to make them his. As the women fled from Wati Nyiru they created the country and landscape around Andrea’s home, Mala.

These beautiful, unique rugs are a cross-cultural collaboration combining Aboriginal designs and traditional Kashmiri rug-making techniques. Chain stitched, using hand dyed wool and finished with a heavy cotton backing, each rug is a completely handmade piece. This project is unusual because the rug is owned by the artists, rather than licensed to a third party. A more empowering way to work, this brings many direct benefits to the artists’ and their community. Control and ownership of intellectual property are also maintained. Purchase of these rugs guarantees a direct return to the Aboriginal artist and their community.

These rugs have non-slip backing and a sleeve for hanging rod.

Rugs are made of wool and as these products are handmade, there may be minor variations in dye and design.

An artwork to be proud of.

The rug is a perfect addition to my home. The story of the Seven sisters fleeing to safety is an intriguing one. I would like to be able to follow the story on my rug but realise that it may be a secret one. The workmanship of the Kashmir style weaving and dying of the wool used fascinates me. A good international partnership.

Wool rid “Tiger”

I’m thrilled with my rug - I’m going to hang it on my bedroom wall. It’s too beautiful to be soiled be my dog’s hairy little feet.

Stunning rug spoilt by having the hanging pleat at the wrong end.

This is a stunning design which I plan to use as a wall hanging. The colours are vibrant and the stitching technique takes nothing away from the design. The rug definitely has an earth and sky orientation which is confirmed by your website, however the track for the hanging rod was stitched at the wrong end so I have had my tailor transfer it to the correct end, it was a complicated job, not to mention expensive. I would love to purchase another design but would only do so after checking that the top was at the right end.
